The project “Theatre meetings-2006” had a diverse and exciting programme.

The role of Amalia, not a young, talented, well-known, but lonely opera singer, was played by the People’s Artist of the USSR Elena OBRAZTSOVA, who demonstrated her true mastery in singing and dancing. Speaking in the language of the theatre, Elena OBRAZTSOVA could feel her partner. The scenes with her beloved who is also her pupil were very dramatic.
A cheerful situation comedy “CAUGHT IN THE NET or TWO-TIMING TAXI DRIVER” presented by the actors of the Akimov Theatre of Comedy (St.-Petersburg) was the second in the programme of “Theatrical meetings-2006”. The taxi driver-bigamist could have lived in clover for many years if he hadn’t drawn the attention of the police. He did nothing wrong. On the contrary, during his shift John tried to detain hooligans. The press got interested in the matter, and the Smith's photograph was printed in the newspaper …
The clown fantasy “The White Side Story” by the Petersburg Theatre Society “COMIC TRUST” mesmerized the theatre-goers. Tragedies alternating with passions were worthy of Shakespeare's pen.
The exhibition program of the festival was also diverse. The exhibitions were arranged in the halls of the Museum of Art, the Literary Museum, the Contemporary Art Center, the Hall of I.Repin Museum-Estate and the Town Hall.
“Water Colours from Trips” is Maksimilian PRESNYAKOV'S exhibition opened during the International Festival of Arts “Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk” in I.Repin Museum-Estate in Zdravnyovo, with part of the exhibits presented in the Music Lounge. Many works are in private collections. Every year the painter’s “Slavic Cycle” gets wider, and currently it includes more than 300 pieces (oil, distemper, water colours, mixed techniques). The works reflecting another side of Maksimilian’s creativity were also demonstrated. There was a chance to see sketches and scenery of “Four Turns of the Sun ‘s Wheel”.
The Literary Museum hosted the exposition “The International Festival of Arts “Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk”– 15 years” .
For the first time the idea about the museum of the International Festival of Arts was voiced at one of the last sessions of the Republican Organizing Committee. It was supported by the city authorities and the Festival Board of Directors. Its implementation required time, but already by the opening of the anniversary forum of arts the exhibition had been mounted.
The Minister of Culture of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir MATVEICHUK took part in the opening ceremony. The exposition included fragments of the scenery, posters, photos, prizes, printed production. All important cultural events of “Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk” found their niche in the museum – the jazz festival, the cinema, the star gallery, the FIDOF show-case, a small street of the City of Masters, etc.
“Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk” is attended by a great number of diplomats, high-ranking officials from many countries of the world. The International Festival of Arts witnessed a historical meeting of the presidents of three countries of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine Alexander LUKASHENKO, Vladimir PUTIN and Leonid KUCHMA. The second level of the exposition is devoted to the history of the 15 editions of the Festival.
The exhibition presented at “Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk” by the Association of young painters “PANTON” is the fourth in the festival history. The festival guests had a chance to appreciate the works by the representatives of the Vitebsk School of Art, known all over the world due to Yury PEN, Marc CHAGALL, Kazimir MALEVICH.
Representatives of the contemporary art school gathered in the association “PANTON”, founded in 2001 by its current author, the artist Alexander PAVLOVSKY. In 2002, in format of the International Festival of Arts there was an exhibition “Live Vitebsk”. Other projects presented include “Etna” (2003), “13th level” (2004), “Panteonika” (2005). In 2006, the exposition was located at one of the best venues – in the hall of the Regional Local Lore museum in the Town Hall.
“Visions of Paradise and Hell, or Metamorphosis by Nikas SAFRONOV” is the name of another exhibition in the Regional Local Lore Museum. It is already the second exposition of the artist in Vitebsk. Ten years ago he presented his Parisian exhibition in Marc Chagall's Art Centre. The exposition is a series of works with medieval castles, portraits of celebrities in the Renaissance style, women-cats. It includes twenty pictures in the traditional for Nikas Safronov style of surrealism.
The Regional Local Lore Museum hosted a personal exhibition of the President of the Russian Academy of Arts, the People’s Artist of Russia, the USSR, Georgia, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Zurab TSERETELI. The opening scheduled on the Day of Russia in format of “Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk” was visited by a large group of Presidium members of the Russian Academy of Arts which originates from the Imperial Academy founded 250 years ago. The exhibition presented more than 150 paintings created in different years: picturesque canvases, original author's graphics, sculptures, enamels, as well as models of monumental works, such, as “Birth of a New Man” (Seville, Spain), the monument “300 years of the Russian fleet. Peter I” (Moscow, Russia), the “Birth of New World” monument devoted to the discovery of America and supposed to be placed in Puerto Rico.
The “Festival Film program-2006” presented Russian, Belarusian, and Ukrainian films.
The feature film “Runaway” by Yegor Konchalovsky opened the festival film program. A story of several months from the life of a cardio surgeon Vetrov, who circumstantially happens to become a social outcast. Tragic events of the film in many respects are caused by a chain of ridiculous incidents. Someone heard something, scraps of conversation, someone saw something and as a result people’s lives are broken.
The Russian film “Anna” (director Evgeny GINZBURG) was awarded Grand Prix “Garnet bracelet” at the XI Russian Film Festival “Literature and Cinema” (Uglich). Starring in the film the opera prima donna Lyubov KAZARNOVSKAYA got “best female role” award and “spectators’ award”. The film may only figuratively be called a drama, since it’s full of flashing humour. Songs, romances, arias from operas and operettas give tremendous charm and sincerity inherent in operettas to the picture.
The film program of the Day of the Belarusian culture and the Day of Vitebsk city was opened by the feature film “I remember …”, produced by the National film studio “Belarusfilm”. The film won the main award of the movie forum “Golden Vityaz”. The hero cannot and doesn’t wish to believe that beauty conceals death in itself. Elderly men return home to the abandoned places in Logoishchina. Checking the radiation level of every log, they begin building the chapel. Anatoly decides to help to decorate it. He also comes back to his home, to the place where his parents and a five-years brother died from radiation.
The fiction film “I Adore You” (director Hussein ERKENOV) appeared to be a touching story of life where love gets on with hatred, a monotonous rhythm of the grain conveyor with passionate rhythms of flamenco, where children are born mature and fully developed, and strict mothers behave like small and confused girls.
The Ukrainian cinematographers closed the festival film program with “Stolen Happiness” (director Andrey DONCHIK). The beloved of Anna Mikhailo is killed during the military actions in Yugoslavia. Anna’s husband Mikola buys and sells in Poland, and Anna herself reminds a provincial of the XIX century. The heroes appear in a situation when happiness is impossible, it is stolen.
On the Day of the Union State at the International Festival of Arts “Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk” Pobedy square venue hosted the contest of children's drawings on asphalt “Under the Blue Sky” . The event was open for children aged between 7-11. The winner of contest was Daniil BOGORAD. His drawing depicted the Town Hall against a blue sky during the festival. During the Festival Vitebsk celebrated its 1032 birthday.
The official opening of the city celebration took place on Svobody square. The fair of national crafts and trades “City of Masters” seemed to have gathered all the globe - Valdai hand bells, Chinese aromas, Eastern sweets and many other articles.
The international festival of pottery and blacksmith’s art “Clay, Fire and Masters” always enjoys popularity. Where else can you see the process of turning raw materials into masterpieces? The ancient technology and the process of work on potter's wheel are rarely demonstrated today. Masters from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and Lithuania arrived to participate in the blacksmith’s master class. It wasn’t for the first time that Vitebsk masters of the factory of art products "OST" had demonstrated their skills. Neither the smiths, nor the spectators were bothered by the summer heat doubled by the working smithies.
The participation in “Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk” of the world famous violinist Sergey STADLER shows that all kinds of art find their niche at the Festival and the classical music enjoys the same right with popular. His concert presented music of two composers: the prominent Mozart and known only to a close circle of professionals Alexey LVOV.
The artists from Israel invited spectators and friends to the concert “Songs of Friends” in the program “Festival without limits”. It was opened by the Ambassador of Israel in Belarus Zeev BEN ÀRIE. The performance of the composer Kim BREITBURG accompanied by the ensemble “DIALOGUE” and Boris MOISEEV was a pleasant surprise in the end of the concert.
No ceremony held in 15-year history of the festival was so solemn and at the same time so sad.
Mikhail Lvovich SHCHULMAN … Many years he headed the International press centre, was the editor of the festival newspaper, the director of concerts and programs.
Today Michael Schulman is not with us …
It is difficult to speak about this wonderful person using the past tense. He lives in the memory of his friends … He lives in television programs which led to the creation of a documentary film. Ten years ago the International Federation of Festival Organizations established a prize to be awarded to mass media representatives “For the coverage of the international festival movement and popularization of FIDOF’s aim” of “Strengthening peace and friendship through music and art”. The prize was named “FIDOF Transitional Golden Ring of Friendship”.
